Zinc and Birds -- If you keep pet birds then you should avoid using
"Febreeze". Birds are acutely sensitive to zinc. Mammals can
tolerate and in fact need zinc as an essential component of their metabolism.
Also avoid using antiperspirants in the vicinity of the cage, they contain
aluminum which is also very toxic to birds. Do not allow them to eat bread
unless it is organic, bread can contain up to 40mg/Kg aluminum additives and
this is enough to kill them (especially small birds) in quite a short time.
Some muffins, waffles and donuts have even more in the form of aerating
agents. -- Good Luck Hermeine Sutherland Milton Keynes England

Pet Odors: This is for anyone that has a problem with
pet stains and odours - even skunk. "Nature's Miracle" is
fantastic!! It can be bought at Pet Smart. It is to be used full strength.
It's rather expensive, but it does the trick. We have a dog and has been great

Birds: Subject: bird droppings. Love to let your pet bird perch on your shoulder but
hate what it leaves behind? Simple solution, just like you do when
burping a baby, place a dish towel over your shoulder before you let it perch
there. If Tweety has already perched and pelleted you before you cover your
blouse, shirt or sweater, don't be in such a hurry to clean it off. Regardless
of what you use it will smear and stain! Use a hair dryer or let it air dry
then flick the dried morsel off and use a whisk brush to get rid of any
remains!

Subject: Catmilk. This is for anyone who feeds their cat Catmilk and doesn't have time to keep washing the bowl it's served in. For quite a while now I've been looking for tiny disposable paper bowls for this purpose but nobody seemed to make them. But one day I saw something in a dollar store and realized that my search was over. Rather than spend $2 or so on a package of 30 or so too-large paper bowls, just buy a package of cupcake pan liners! They're just the right size and just strong enough to hold the Catmilk. And best of all, they're dirt-cheap. You can buy a hundred or so for $1 at a dollar store. You can also get them at any supermarket if necessary. -- Chris M. 01 Dec 2007
Kitten Games
If you have a kitten in the house who gets over-excited wanting to play when
you aren't in the mood.. keep an eye out for some of those keychain laser
pointers. You can sit on the couch and have him chasing it all over the house.
LOADS of fun.
I thought I would be able to run it into another room and then "lose"
the dot to keep it out of my hair for awhile. But NO my kitten was too smart
for that. It now paws my pocket to start the game, and if it loses the dot it
comes running straight back to me. It knows where the dot comes from.

A squirt gun does work as a training device for cats but some people are

Subject: Doggy Smells. To get rid of the smell on your dog, instead of using expensive dog shampoos, use a tomato (i personally use tomato puree in the same way as you would use regular dog shampoo) this will rid your dog of its smell for about six months and your dog will love you for it.
A dogs smell is the reason why some dogs will roll in about anything that smells different to itself, so by getting rid of its natural smell it won't have the urge to roll in anything.
Relax, your dog won't smell of tomatoes, it won't smell of anything, can also be used on your self if you have a strong body odour.
p.s. A VERY IMPORTANT p.s. if your dog has light hair, i wouldn't recommend using puree, as you will end up with a pink dog, unless you want to spend a couple of hours rinsing him out, fortunately the dog smell will still be gone.

Subject: Barking Dogs. My friend found a way to stop a dog from
barking in the middle of the night. She got up, got dressed, and walked
the neighborhood until she found the barking dog. Every time the dog

owners! After a few times of ringing the doorbell she heard the backdoor
shut and no more barking
dog. She said they never came to the front door to answer the doorbell.

Subject: Barking Dogs at Night #1 Hey! Everyone has had malicious thoughts about barking dogs at night and
their owners. How many of us have called next door neighbors to complain
about Fido's nocturnal noises? Most I would suspect. If your neighbors are
like mine they couldn't care less. Of course, this magnifies the irritation.
Below is an humane solution to the problem.
Take care to judge the size of the offending animal. The suggestions below
relate to a dog the size of a Beagle. Here follows, the formula:
Take an accurate 1/6 of a dose of chocolate Ex-lax, wrap it in a small ball
of ground beef and feed it to the offending canine beastie. Shortly the
problem will cease. THEORY ELUCIDATED Barking requires the ability to concentrate considerable
pressure in the abdominal region. This is implicit upon the maintenance of
pressure with all sphincter muscles. Frankly speaking Ex-Lax significantly
reduces the integrity of the anal sphincter thereby dramatically reducing the
animal's ability to sound because of the simultaneous loss of pressure due to
involuntary excretion. -- Bill Mac
Response:
Bad Tips. I'm writing you to inform you that giving ex-lax to a dog could result in the fatality of the animal since chocolate is poisonous to dogs. - TW 12/06/09

Subject: barking dogs at night
#2 Recently I heard of a way to stop those dogs who are barking at night ... and it's not dangerous to the animal. (You just have to be dressed and ready to go out to do something about it. Usually the dogs are barking after the person being annoyed is already in bed.) I saw this on a Japanese TV program, with instructions by dog trainers who made house calls to help people know how to control their dogs better.
Fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar to 1 part water (for example, 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup water). When the dog starts barking, simply spray the vinegar water in the direction of the dog ... not in it's face. The smell will cause the dog to have to breathe in more deeply, and it only takes a couple of times to train the dog to stop barking. This works best if the owner of the dog uses this method, as the dog would normally bark more at strangers.
House dogs that barked every time the doorbell rang were trained to stop barking in less than 5 minutes - and it worked there after, too. They would ring the bell - the dog would bark, the owner would spray once in the air above the dog's head, and the dog immediately stopped barking ... without the owner having to say a word! They waited a few minutes, and repeated the process. The third time they rang the bell (a few minutes after the second time), the dog did not bark.

Subject: Fido's Hygiene
Whether you have 1 dog or 4 (like me), bath time for the pooch(es) can take
on a circus-like atmosphere. Especially if the breed is known to be very
active (I have JRTs 5, 2, 1 & 1 yrs old). Here's some tips on how this day
goes off without a hitch once a month (we live in red dirt country).
1. SURPRISE! We make that day a special day for those 4-legged
members of our family. My husband & I spend
time
with our dogs everyday but when the day comes
to
clean em up, they get extra special treats, a
lot
more time & attention.
2. STAY ON SCHEDULE. In our house, it's the 1st Friday of the
month. Friday for a couple
of reasons.
Usually a light work day
due to being the
end of the work week & you
should have
more energy.
3. ACTIVITY PLANNING. Much like putting together a child's
birthday party, eventful
is the key to
success but the end goal
here are pets
that are too tuckered to
tangle with you
over the issue of their
lack of hygiene.
We devote 1/2 of the day
to playing
fetch, chasing bubbles,
swimming or
chasing the hose stream
& tripping
around the yard picking
up the little
pieces of a once whole
toy. And they
get tidbits of a
favorite goody. After
a good few or more hours
we head in to
sweep the bathroom
commencing the
days fun by duelling the
vacuum hose
extension, it dared to
invade their area
& take the stockpile
provision of hair
they spread along the
baseboards. But
you should never let
children do this
as most vacuum suction
is very
strong which could
suffocate the
animal &/or kill your
pet, especially
smaller pets. And
doing this may
make it difficult for
you to get chores
done if they won't
stop attacking the
machine.
4. COME & GET IT! A quick dance & then they eat. Warming their food
is not just better for their digestive
system but it
also works the same as warmed milk does for
insomnia. Thanksgiving too, if you're
serving
turkey. I get a show in their anticipation
of dinner.
It's an adaptation of River Dancing but
they add in
some whimpering, jumping straight up in the
air, &
an occasional anxiety yipe. I get into the
act too.
5. POTTY BREAK. After making sure each others bowls are thoroughly
cleaned of any remaining morsels it's outside
to take
care of business, you know what lukewarm water
does
to us.
6. MAIN EVENT. Round up all those attending the de-grubbing of the
dirt ball gang in the bathroom or where ever
you
perform this task. Make sure they have things
to chew
on & fiddle with while waiting their turn or
while you
get the water just right. I find it easier if
I sit on the
side of the tub with my feet helping to control
urges
to flee the scene. Which won't be too strong
since it
was a busy afternoon with no nap & a full
belly. Wrap
each one up in a clean, dry towel paying
particular
attention to the feet, head, ears, chest &
around the
tail. Sending em off with a big hug & smooch,
NEXT!
It's on to another pooped pooch.
7. POTTY BREAK. Once all done & every buddy is a sparkling version of
it's previous mud rolling self, it's a good
idea to take
your pet(s) out again to do their business.
You will
notice a depleted energy level in your pet,
adjust the
activities accordingly depending on how you
pet(s)
walk outside & how long they take. **Our lot of hooligans will then snooze while we take care of our
nutritional needs & then have a snack later. Don't be alarmed if you find
yourself up the next morning with no company or your pet(s) seems to be slow
or worn out. Just like human kids, a big day today for them means a more
peaceful tomorrow for you. We get our household chores done so much quicker
the next morning because they sleep in & lay around catching up on rest.

HORSE BREEDING / HORSE MATING
Foaling at Home - tips for a successful birth
In Labour. You will sense when labour has started by your mare's restlessness.
She will start pacing round her box. She may peer at or kick her stomach, and
lift her tail.
Birth. Lasting between 20 minutes and half an hour and the following is what
takes place:
1.Breaking of the waters - call the vet if nothing else happens after 15
minutes.
2.The amnion - a balloon-like bag - will appear. Normally this is broken by
the foal's front feet. If it doesn't tear normally break it and clear the
foal's nostrils.
3. Appearance of the foal's front feet - call the vet if any other part of the
body comes out first.
4. Head, shoulders and rib cage and last of all the hindlegs. If the mare is
struggling - ribcage and shoulders can cause problems - hold the foal's front
legs above the fetlocks and gently pull it down towards the mares hocks as she
pushes.
5. The umbilical cord should break naturally, turning white as the blood
ceases to flow.Treat the stump with antiseptic. If it breaks early whilst
still red pinch the stump to stop it bleeding and treat with antiseptic.
Afterbirth.
1. Expulsion of the afterbirth. A retained or incomplete afterbirth may lead
to a dangerous infection in the mare. So when it's finally expelled lay it out
and inspect it thoroughly. If there are any holes other than the one out of
which the foal emerged or the bag seems incomplete call the vet.
2. Cleansing. When the foal starts to suckle you know the mare has cleansed -
cleansing can take as long as six hours. At this point leave the pair in peace
but remain vigilent until the foal has passed his first droppings and can lie
down and get up again on his own.
3. The next day ask the vet to do a check and give the foal his anti-tetanus
injection.
