Finding the perfect sofa
When you decide to revamp your living room, take some time to think about what you actually use the room for. Are you a couch potato family, who all like to take it easy and watch films? Do you use the room for active games like Twister or Just Dance? Depending on how much moving around you do in your living room, you can choose different sofa shapes to fit the available space.
Some people prefer to have two sofas facing each other, with the TV against or on one of the other walls. Other people have a focal point of a fire, which it makes sense for the sofa to face. No one wants the fire behind the sofa, after all!
Corner sofas can be perfect for families who enjoy close physical contact. Sometimes, though, when you’ve got visitors who you don’t know that well, a corner sofa can be a little too intimate. In that case, it’s handy to have a two-seater sofa or armchairs that can go alongside the corner sofa.
As well as providing somewhere to sit, sofas can also be versatile. Sofa beds obviously perform a dual role, as they allow you to transform your living room into a guest room when you need it.
Once you’ve decided on the sofa shape for you, think about other pieces of furniture that might go well with it. Modern coffee tables often come with a shelf below the table top, useful for magazines and the like. Some open up to reveal a hidden storage unit underneath, which can be a perfect toy store if you have young children, but don’t want the room to look like a nursery when they’ve gone off to bed.
