Christmas shopping - Tips and Hints

Christmas can be a stressful time of year, with worries particularly around how to afford all the gifts that your loved ones want and how to manage your finances carefully. It can be tempting to make use of credit cards and overdrafts at this time of year if you get caught up in the frenzy of last minute gift buying and the general excitement of the season, but these can be incredibly expensive means of borrowing - particularly as a number of credit providers have recently announced that interest rates will rise in December - meaning that some customers may need the entire coming year to pay off the debt before they build it up again! It`s easy to see how vicious the circle can become.

Rather than find yourself struggling or worrying about finances at Christmas time, why not take a few sensible steps to manage your money carefully.

Plan your spending

Try making a list of everyone you need to buy for, with a clear idea of your budget at the start. You can then allocate your budget to each person and know how much you have to spend on each of them. This will save you spending too much on one person and finding yourself short for other gifts. Having a gift list in advance will also help you not to be swayed by the special offers and rows of tempting goodies in the shops!

Shop Online

If you use price comparison sites such as Kelkoo or Pricerunner you can search for branded items and find which online retailer is selling them the cheapest. The savings can be substantial and you can combine this technique with using a cashback site - below.

Use cashback sites

Cashback is a great way of being rewarded for your shopping. There are various online sites that offer cashback such as topcashback and rpoints - you simply sign up to create your own account and then any time you order something online, you do it via the cashback site link to qualify for either a small cash amount, or a % reimbursement on your purchase. Over time the results can really stack up and you can find yourself with a useful amount of cash which can then be transferred directly into your bank account. If you aren't an online shopper there are also other reward schemes such as clubcard and `points` schemes - look at Tesco, Boots and Nectar to get your started.
